Riyadh, February 21, 2025 – In celebration of Saudi Arabia’s fourth Founding Day on February 22, the Riyadh Municipality has adorned the capital with more than 8,000 national flags, transforming the city into a vibrant tribute to the Kingdom’s rich heritage.
As one of the two major national celebrations alongside Saudi National Day, Founding Day commemorates the establishment of the First Saudi State in 1727 by Imam Mohammed bin Saud. This year, the city’s main roads, squares, bridges, and landmarks have been decorated with flags representing both the First Saudi State and the modern Kingdom, reinforcing the spirit of unity and national pride.
The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the flags have been strategically placed across main road masts, bridges, intersections, and lampposts, ensuring an aesthetically harmonious display that complements Riyadh’s urban landscape. Specialized field teams meticulously carried out the installations using mechanical safety measures, with a strict focus on sustainability and regular maintenance throughout the celebrations.
As part of the festivities, landmarks across Riyadh including ministry buildings have been illuminated with green lights, while a series of special events will take place across the region, featuring firework displays, traditional folk performances, and cultural activities.
The Riyadh Municipality emphasized its commitment to enhancing national identity and urban aesthetics in alignment with Vision 2030, which aims to elevate the capital’s visual appeal while celebrating the Kingdom’s rich history and cultural legacy.
“We invite everyone to join the Riyadh Municipality’s Founding Day events across 47 municipalities in more than 47 locations, where visitors can enjoy lively celebrations, diverse cultural activities, and interactive experiences,” the Municipality announced on its official account.
Expressing his gratitude, Abdullah Ahmed, a Riyadh resident, praised the Kingdom’s leadership for fostering unity and peace. “I am thankful to Almighty Allah for blessing us with safety and security. We are fortunate to have wise leadership under King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and we proudly celebrate Imam Mohammed bin Saud’s legacy as the founder of the First Saudi State,” he said.
The annual Founding Day celebration marks a pivotal moment in Saudi history, recognizing the Kingdom’s journey toward nationhood that began in 1727 when Imam Mohammed bin Saud succeeded his cousin, Zaid bin Markhan, as ruler of Diriyah. This historic milestone continues to be honored nationwide, uniting citizens and residents in appreciation of Saudi Arabia’s enduring legacy.
